PITTSFIELD — A company that has turned a former tannery in Pittsfield into a site for converting used vegetable frying oil into fuel expects to more than triple its work force in the next year.

Amenico officially purchased the former tannery site late last month but has been operating there since April. It buys vegetable oil in bulk, sells it at a discount to New Hampshire restaurants, then buys back the used oil and refines it. The fuel can then be used to heat homes and businesses using a special boiler.

Company officials tout the oil's renewable, biodegradable and nontoxic properties. The company plans to increase its base of restaurants and food service customers to 1,000 in the next year, and increase its work force to 25 people.
